Here's what you need to know to prepare for your newborn photography session

  1. Timing is everything: It's best to schedule your newborn session within the first 8-21 days of your baby's life. During this time, babies are still very sleepy and curl up into those cute, posed positions that photographers love. Don't worry, though, if baby is older! We can photograph your new baby any time during the first 8 weeks.
  2. Plan for a relaxed session: Newborn photography can take a little longer than other types of photography, so be prepared for your newborn session to take up to 2.5 hours.. Make sure your baby is well-fed and rested, and bring along any comfort items they may need, such as a pacifier.
  3. Choose the right photographer: Look for a photographer who has experience with newborn photography, and who is comfortable working with babies. Valerie Steinkoenig has 10 years of experience, a Newborn Safety certification, and is a mom of two, so you can be sure that your baby is in good hands.
  4. Dress appropriately: Simple, neutral clothing is best for newborn photography. Avoid bright colors or patterns that could distract from the focus of the session - your new baby.
  5. Safety first: Your baby's safety is of the utmost importance during the photography session. Valerie Steinkoenig is Newborn Safety certified and takes every precaution necessary, including hand washing and sanitizing before each session. She also works with an assistant to ensure that your baby is safe and secure at all times.
  6. Composite images: Some newborn photography poses are only safe when they are created using composite images. This means that two photographs are merged together in photoshop to create the final image. Valerie Steinkoenig has experience in creating these composite images and will create certain poses when it is deemed safe for your baby.
  7. Be prepared for some mess: Newborns are prone to accidents, so be prepared for some spit-ups and other messes during the session. Don't worry, your photographer will be prepared for this, and will clean up any messes as they happen. The Austin Newborn Photography Studio keeps diapers, burp cloths, and wipes within reach at all times.
  8. A wealth of experience: With over 100's of newborns photographed over the years, Valerie Steinkoenig has a wealth of experience in capturing these special moments in a safe and beautiful way.
  9. Relax and enjoy the session: The most important thing is to relax and enjoy the session. Just sit back and let the photographer do their job.
